REFLECTIONS

What did I learn?

  • Food waste is complicated issue to tackle, because it's tied up with a complex set of actions from planning to discarding. Every person has a different approach and unique challenges as they encounter the issue and beyond that people have good intentions before wasting their produce.

  • In designing for behavior changes, it is important to consider what are the outcomes expected from interacting with a product and therefore creating small milestones for users that logically connect to each sequence need to considered. Celebrating small achievements could help users to observe their progress and how far they've come.

  • In addition to that, when introducing a new concept, it's important to work with designs that familiar for users. Teaching a new subject with a brand new approach could overwhelm users and make them lose interest on the topic itself.

  • Design is not the only thing that plays an important role for a success of a product, but words is a powerful aspect that has a significant impact in promoting better engagement and understanding for user while interacting with a new product.

  • My favorite part of this project is actually discovering that there are so many people who are interested in learning and knowing more about how they can be better in reducing their waste. Many users that I met during the usability test found the information about storage tips and fresh produce assessment to be very insightful and informational. This have given me an assurance that we, as end consumers, have been kept in the dark for so long and there is a hopeful future for each everyone of us to be more mindful and aware in managing our food consumption and waste when we are equipped with the right tool.

If I have 3 more months, what would I do?

  1. Developed a smart recipe. During the usability test, many people have asked me if there's a way in the app to suggest easy recipes to develop with the fresh produce that they have. This is a really interesting opportunity that could be developed because not many people are creative, adventurous, or confident enough in cooking. If the app could give suggestions for users on what to cook with the available material, that will work even better in promoting consumption and preventing waste.

  2. Adding multiple items using static image. In my current prototype, users can only scan item one by one to add their produce. What if there is a way for users to simply take a picture or upload an image of their grocery items they bought and the app will be able to identify all produce at once rather than individually scanning them, so user can simply add it to their inventory.

  3. Integrated a Smart Grocery List. Planning is definitely had a big impact to prevent food waste. Therefore I'm envisioning to develop a grocery list feature in the app that connects to recipe recommendations, then can also identify things that they always get, and most importantly to notify users during shopping when they're buying items that aren't on the list. This way, users will be able to monitor what they buy and control their spending.
