CONTENT
Where does the content in the app come from?
The content in the Item Page in my app prototype is taken from Stale-by-Date, an educational site written by Becca Mercy that provides detailed guide on the shelf-life of food (especially fresh produce) as well as information about their storage methods. The site covers insightful information that answers many questions such as: how long can produce last in the fridge? How can food be stored to increase its shelf life? When does food go bad?
Becca Mercy, a Hotel and Hospitality Management graduate from Utalii College in Nairobi, Kenya; started her career in the hotel industry where she discovered how much food was being wasted due to the lack of information. Her passion for writing then drives her to start her own blog discussing the topic to educate and help people reducing their waste.
On the other hand, the content for assessing food is taken from Eat or Toss, a blog written by Rachael Jackson that answers many of our ambiguous questions related to food consumption. "The goal is to take the mystery out of our food, so we can understand it better, enjoy it more, save money, and throw away less." (EatOrToss.com). The blog focuses on solving confusing image of food, explain what it means based on a scientific research, then suggest if you should eat or toss them. All articles that are posted in the blog are shared after a thorough research on journal paper, interview with post-harvest researchers and other experts in horticulture, botany, plant pathology, microbiology and food safety.
Rachael Jackson is a journalist who formerly worked as a research manager in National Geographic. She founded this blog after feeling anxious about not wanting to waste food nor get sick from it, due to her uncertainties in seeing spots on apple or caterpillar in the broccoli she bought from a share farmer box. She couldn't find a reliable source that answers her confusion, and so she started her own research and launched this blog.
