Usability Test

TEST

Usability Test Objectives

The goal of this usability testing is to identify issues with the design and how information is structured in the app. Understanding what information matters for users and whether users could find information they need as they expected.

Apart from that, this usability testing is conducted to validate if the proposed concept: fridge and pantry inventory management, could help users to keep track of food they have (especially fresh produce) and thus shop mindfully. The goal is to get users’ reaction whether the app would be beneficial in helping users to learn and take actions upon extending the life of fresh produce, as well as making mindful decisions on which produce to buy by visualizing what they have in their kitchen.

Research Questions:

  1. Is the content presented in a way that is easy to find and understand?

  2. Can a user successfully perform given tasks?

  3. Does the user find the information helpful and educational for them to learn about fresh produce?

Methodology

I conducted 3 phases of usability test. The first one is to test out Design A, I recruited 6 people and analyze the result. I identified issues discovered in Design A, then refined the prototype by developing Design B. Then, I recruited 3 people and again, repeating the same process in the first usability test I examined the result to create the final design. Lastly, I did a third usability test by recruiting 3 people to test out the final design to validate the final concept.

Target Audience

  • Age: 25 - 40

  • Do their grocery in store

  • Cook their meal at least 2 - 3 times per week

  • Having issues with keeping track of what they have at home

Tools:

  • Zoom

  • Link to prototype (Prototype created in Adobe XD)

  • Google Form (Consent Form)

Usability Test Script: Questions & Tasks

Warm Up Questions (5 min)

  1. Can you tell me a little bit about yourself? What is your occupation and what do you do on a daily basis?

  2. Can you briefly share your journey before going to the grocery store? What’s your process? (e.g: plan a meal, make a list, then shop)

  3. Are you currently keeping track of what produce you have at home? What methodology do you use to help you keep track of fresh produce you have at home? Do you use any app to help you perform that task?

User Tasks (20 min)

Task 1: Show the Kitchen View

First, I’m asking you to look at this page and tell me what’s your first impression of it? What are your thoughts? Anything comes to your mind?

What do you think this app is for? What do you think you could do here? What would you do here?

Transition

Now, I’m going to ask you to do some specific tasks. I will read the task out loud as well as send the task on the chat so you can have some reference as you are performing this task. As you perform the task, I’m asking you to try to think out loud and explain what you see, what you think, and what you’re trying to do

Plan

Design A

Task 2A: Eat Me First

Imagine this is the list of fresh produce you currently have at home. You realize that strawberries are listed as a priority item to eat and you are aware that you barely eat those strawberries you bought last week. So, you want to learn from the app on how to preserve strawberries to make it last longer instead of throwing them.

Then, update the app if you have a solution for preserving your strawberries?

Task 3A: Assess Me

From looking at this app, you realize that cabbage has been sitting in your fridge for a month and you know you haven't used them at all. You aren’t sure if it’s still good to eat. Find out how you can find solutions to evaluate if your cabbage is still safe to consume.

Task 4A: Shop Produce

You’re currently at the grocery store and going to use the app to scan your fresh produce as you go. This way, those items would be added to your kitchen inventory in real time. Perform an action of buying 2 bell peppers by interacting with the app as if you’re shopping in the store.

Task 5A: Check Fridge

As you stroll around the store, you pass by the banana section. You know you eat one banana every day, but you aren’t sure how many bananas are left at home. How would you check how many bananas you have in order to figure out how many bananas you need to buy from the store?

Task 6A: Add to Kitchen

You’re done shopping at the store and now it’s time to add your groceries to your kitchen inventory. Please update the app with all the items you bought at the store.

Design B

Task 2B: Eat Me First

Imagine this is the list of fresh produce you currently have at home. You realize that strawberries are listed as a priority item to eat and you are aware that you barely eat those strawberries you bought last week. You find out there is one moldy strawberry in the box. You aren’t sure if it’s still safe to keep the box of strawberries. You want to find information from the app if you should eat or toss them if there’s only one mold.

Task 3B: Toss Item

You decided to toss a quarter of them, because some of them are already oozing. Update the app to delete quarter of your strawberries.

Task 4B: Assess Me

Now you realize that your avocado starts browning. So you decided to cut out the avocados. You’re surprised to find out that there’s a brown spot in one part of your avocados. Find out if it’s safe to eat avocados that has brown spot

Task 4.1B: Eat Item

Then you decide to eat the avocados. Update the app that you ate one of your avocados.

Task 5B: Shop Produce

You’re currently at the grocery store and going to use the app to scan your fresh produce as you go. This way, those items would be added to your kitchen inventory in real time. Perform an action of buying 2 bell peppers by interacting with the app as if you’re shopping in the store.

Task 6B: Add to Kitchen

You’ve finished shopping. How would you add those bell pepper to your kitchen fridge and to add bananas to your pantry?

Warm Up Questions (5 min)

  1. What are your thoughts about the concept?

  2. Is there anything that is particularly helpful or frustrating for you while you’re performing the tasks?

  3. Do you have any suggestions on how we can improve this app?

TEST

Method of Analysis

I created a consent form to record the video and ask the participant to share their screen as they’re performing the task. Then uses the recorded usability test to investigate how the user doing as they completed the tasks assigned. I downloaded the trasncript, highlight some key points and take a note on Miro board.
Then take a closer look on each tasks to analyze how long it takes for them to complete the task and how the interact with the app. I use Miro board to record their comments, feedback, and questions as users performed the tasks.
Finally, I color coded them based on similar themes emerging, organized the data, assigned common themes title on each group, then break them up to UX and UI related issue.
